Steps in our Lives

Tonight I'm writing from near Tampa, Florida, where I've spent the last 2 weeks on family business. My sister, brother and I have helped to move my Mom, almost 91, into Assisted Living. Florida is a long way from my home in Western Nebraska and how I've loved the restaurants, shopping, discount shops, quilt shops, but how I HATE the traffic and gazillions of people and cars.

This was an emotional and difficult project - we were not sure how our mother would adapt to leaving her own condo, but being gregarious by nature, she seems to be taking it well, and enjoys her new friends. We 'children' were having a harder time than our mother, but are happy with the decisions made.

I can't wait to get back to 'normal', read all your blog updates, and get to my quilting again. I only hit one particularly appealing quilt shop (oh gosh, they are ALL appealing!).

Peace to you all, and Happy Holidays.

  1. Elaine, it's such a blessing for you "children" that Mom is making is easier for you.

(And I agree about traffic in Florida. We finally stopped going to Naples in February because we were spending our entire day in traffic. The natives are probably not sorry to see 1 fewer car in the mix!)

  2. Glad your mother seems to be adjusting - that's a hard decision to make.

I lived in the Tampa area about 9 years ago and the traffic was bad then - I still visit the area and they don't seem to have made any improvement!

  3. I'm glad to hear the move went smoothly. Sometimes living alone can be pretty lonesome for an outgoing person so it is probably better in the end. My dad is 92 and living alone and if we have to get him into assisted living it will be a nightmare. He definitely wants to stay in his house. So far so good.
    Have a great Christmas.

  4. I am facing the same thing with my 91 year old Auntie. Although she says she wants to move out of DenverTown to be closer to me, I am not sure. But I'll do all the footwork and interviewing of the places.

  5. This past summer my brothers and I moved my parents out of the home they had lived in for 49 years. They moved into senior apartments. 8 weeks later my dad had to move into a nursing home. It was a tough move, but us children survived. You will too.

  7. Dear Elaine, I'm so glad your mom's move has gone well. It is a hard time and sometimes confusing for all involved! I still have my parents to help out in the future, but we went thru all of that with my husband's parents. Merry Christmas and I hope your travels are safe.

  8. Change is hard, and it is good that your mother has you and your siblings to help her through this transition. Glad things went smoothly.

  9. It can never be easy when your family member has to give up their home but it sounds as though she was making the transition well.

    Have a safe trip back.

  10. Steps, indeed. We all have to take steps, and we all need all the help we can get. Thank you for the hugs, and hugs right back at you --

  11. Yes I know what you mean. We are in the process of Assisted living with my MIL and it is a transitional period. Life is full of transitions.

  12. One of life's little "joys". I had been wondering where you had disappeared too. Look after yourself, Tracey
