Blogline Mysteries

I have 52 Blogs listed on Bloglines, LOVE visiting you all, and have enjoyed many of your comments on MY blog. Occasionally I receive over 20 comments for which I am most grateful – who would’a thought anyone would be interested in my feeble efforts at showing off humble quilt projects?

On Bloglines, there is an indication of how many people subscribe to each of the blogs listed. I was heartbroken (well not quite heartbroken but ...), there are only 4 subscribers to mine, and one of them is me at my office.

This is another mystery, because often, I will post something and within a short time, I receive comments, many more than 3, so you all know I'm here! So I wonder about that “number of subscribers.” Some of you bloggers have over 100 subscribers! And others, that I remember as being the subject of frequent discussion, have only a few.

Can anyone explain this mystery? Some of us are on the earlier version of a Blogger, and some later (beta?) Blogger, and some post from other systems.

So, now I’m studying all the blogs, and looking at style, photos, etc., and started wondering what draws visitors to various sites. Well, I’m worn out thinking about it, but still am curious.

This is where I should again ask for another Computer Geek. (I wish I wasn’t so curious about things that I know nothing ! – I DO wear myself out wondering.)

  1. I subscribe to your blog site's "feed" through IE7 so I know when you post a new post. I don't subscribe to your side through bloglines. I find that sometimes bloglines is down. IE7 has never been down--so far. :)
Keep up the good work on your quilts!

  2. I wondered about that too...(I'm guilty of checking how many subscriptions I have as well...shhhhhh!)

  3. You can also find people through blogger through similar interests (those code words you will have listed on your profile). There are many blog readers and each one only keeps track of the ones that use their service.

I think I found you because someone had you linked - or because you belong to a quilt group.

  4. When you go to sub with bloglines - there are usually more than one feed to choose from. The number that shows up for subscribers is just the main feed. There are two feeds for my blog (not sure why) one has 32 subscribers and one has 89. The 89 is what shows up.

I check mine periodically by going to my blog using my sub with bloglines button on my toolbar and it takes me to the subscription page.

  5. I found subscribing on Bloglines to be too involved to carry through. I access the weblogs I read on a daily basis through my toolbar. Many are there because I discovered them through comments left on one of my postings (such was the case with you, Elaine). Others I found through surfing the quilt art rings or following links.

  6. There are other blog subscription options. Some could just have you as a favorite with their browser.

  8. Perhaps all roads do lead to Rome - doesn't really matter which route you take - in the end you get to Rome. The internet is so huge and vastly connected - who is to explain?

    Cheers!

  9. Mary's right, there's different feeds. I'm another bloglines user and mine shows that you have 32 subscribers.

Although... I have 179 blogs on my bloglines! And yeah, I've been able to keep up, but no way can I comment on each and every one. :P

  10. When I looked you have 3 feeds - one has 4, one 8 and the other has 32, so you actually have 44 subscribers Elaine. That's why we visit you so quickly!

  12. I subscribe through Google Reader - which I love by the way. I have a little icon on my browser to open the reader and it shows all my subscriptions, neatly categorized into little folders by topic. I can read the entry right there, but must click on the link to come and comment. I'm sure that my subscription doesn't show up as a number for you anywhere.

Oh, I also have a little icon on my browser to subscribe if I come across something new I like - click, click, and it is added to my Google Reader.

I love your blog; I love your quilts; I love when I occasionally get to see you face-to-face! :)

  13. I'm one of your subscribers through Bloglines. I like blogs that are mainly craft orientated and usually include pictures. I try to comment on anything that catches my eye on all the blogs I follow :)

  14. I subscribe through bloglines. Unlike others I seldom have problems with bloglines.

  15. I subscribe to your blog through bloglines. I think the two things I look for in a blog are interesting photos (esp of quilts) and good writing, especially if it's a bit funny from time to time.

  16. I think lots of us check oru number of subscribers, but I've come to the conclusion it doesn't mean much. I lost a bunch of subscribers when I created my newer blog. I thought that was very odd, as it certainly was easy to find the new one. I think I have at least 25-30 fewer subscribers. I don't think I lost anyone who comments regularly or even now or then, so I decided I don't care if I lost people who had no wish to get further acquainted.

I know I always enjoy your blog. Like Leah I subscribe to well over a hundred blogs through bloglines, and sometimes there just isn't time to comment. I got so far behind with my reading this last week - I still have 112 blogs to catch up with.

  17. Just wanted to let you know I haven't had time to leave comments but I'm here visiting!!!!

  18. You got me thinking about mine! Actually in Bloglines for you I show 32 subscribers. But you want to know what is really sad - I only have 4 across all my feeds! Wish I wouldn't have checked or thought about it!

  19. I think some of the subscriptions are private and you have more readers than you think. You could install a counter to verify that but regardless, not every reader comments either.

I'm like Norma and subscribe through IE 7 as bloglines seemed problematic--all those exclamation points. Sooooo, I wouldn't sweat what the numbers mean--you have people following you that you may not even know about!
