Am I made of money?

I saw this on the "New Things" rack at my LQS -- My word -- $30.00!!! Wow, who buys these things? This is really too much, all these rulers, new fabrics, more books ??? am I made of money?

... so I bought that ...

and the little yo-yo maker looks intriguing ... and a few more pieces of 30's fabric (is "30" stuck in my head?)

And look at the templates inside that package - aren't they interesting. Even better, when I started using them, that GREEN has a certain irridescence that makes the edges GLOW - here on a wood table, and on a green cutting mat -- and is very easy to see.

... a little bit tedious, finding a middle on the sides, but really not difficult sewing, going slowly and using a pokey thing. I used a pin for the start and the middle, and sewed slowly, using my knee lift a LOT, to keep adjusting. If you try this, I would suggest having a NEW blade. My 45 mm cutter worked just fine but I DID use the smaller one also. Work on the corner of your table so you don't have to move your fabric. Directions included cutting for FQs but I ended up using strips, to be more economical. The finished blocks look a bit 'rough' at this stage.

I'm doing about the same on my "fabric/quilting stuff" diet as I am on a "food" diet.

  2. Wow, what an unusual block! I really like the way the quilt in the picture looks, so I know yours is going to look great too!

You know, I think the 30's fabrics call to us because our grandmothers used them! Reminds me of spending the night with Granny. She made pallets on the floor using her quilts for us to sleep on and under!

  5. That block has a look of the depression era blocks and quilts and using the 30's reproduction fabrics was inspired!

  6. I love that it had to come home with you!!
What a great looking block though, well worth it...and just think, if you bought it over here it would probably be $60, so you really saved money!!!
I just got one of those little yo-yo makers, haven't had a try yet, Tracey

  7. There are days in the "life of a woman" that she has to do what she has to do...and if that entails buying some fabulous quilting templates and some wonderous fabric with a side of carmelly-chocolaty goodness, well all the better!!!

  8. Wow...that looks fun! Curved piecing! I've never seen anything like that block...I'll bet it would be amazing in batiks, too. Inspiring...

  9. Elaine,

I read your block nearly every day. I enjoy seeing your interesting quilts.

The curved seam 30's blocks look GREAT. I'm working on a curved seam project myself, but I'm doing mine all by hand.

  10. Oh, my, Elaine, this is a wonderful pattern and I just love the templates. It is going to be beautiful in the vintage fabrics. I love curved seams, they are fun.

  11. I saw that pattern at the Dallas Quilt Show. I didn't know whether to order and try to sell it or not. I would have to make one for a sample, probably, HeeHee. Yours looks really nice and I can't wait to see more. I did get out the yo-yo maker and made some yo-yos. Beware--it is addictive.

  13. Those blocks are cute, and since you have already started using the templates, I'd say you are getting your moneys worth. I too was intrigued by those, but haven't come across them in person to be tempted to buy them. I got a yoyo maker at the quilt show though, and am about to embark on that journey someday. Guess I should make something just to justify that purchase.

  14. You crack me up!!!! And, yes, we quilters are apparently made of money--or plastic. Love your purchases.

  15. This is a really interesting pattern - kind of like an orange peel block. Don't know how happy I would be with all those curved seams, tho! You're doing a beautiful job. And, I agree with Paula - these fabrics are appealing because they look like the quilts my grandmother pieced, that I slept under then I was a kid.

  17. Looks like you made a good purchase! I am so glad to know I am not the only quilter who gives in to my weaker side. While at retreat, we took a field trip to a local quilt shop. The first trip I saw this great jelly roll in this cute little tin. I resisted. The next day, we went again to the same shop. (I had the vehicle, so I had to drive!) This time I could not resist, so I bought it, along with some other fabric. Then, when I went outside to wait for the other ladies to make their purchases, I saw some sale fabric in a wagon in front of the store that I "had" to have, so I went back in and made one more purchase! I am so glad my plastic is available for these *fabric emergencies*. VBS!

  20. Those blocks are beautiful -- but I'm so not sure I have the patience for them. Fun finds at the fabric store -- and the yo yo maker is fun :0).

  21. Those blocks are certainly something new & interesting! I can see why you caved in to buy the rulers, etc.

  22. It's a great looking block, but I really hate to piece, so better you than me.

My favorite part is doing the quilting. Is that odd?

  23. Gosh, Elaine, I really like those blocks! I like the quilt from farther away, as the blocks weld to form the pattern...very nice!

  25. Sensational!

Speaking as a quilter who just this morning spent nearly $20 online for a certain acrylic template, I totally understand.

  26. What an interesting pattern! I've never seen one quite like that before. I see it's by Atkinson Designs. Her patterns are so well-written and easy to follow! It'll be fun to see how this one turns out. And yes, those plastic templates call to me too. I even have some I've never used - yet. Found your blog thru Purple Pam's blog. I'll be back!
