I am so proud of myself -- in preparation for expected guests (who unfortunately could not come), I cleaned out a corner and resurrected this UFO(and a few others also). The corner is dusted and this project is back on "go".
Even though I knew how to do this technique, it was still enjoyable to take the class with my quilt-y sisters! A guild member, Judy Woodworth, gave the class. Judy is a quilt artist, and a long-arm professional machine quilter, and we're all happy when she's able to lead a class. DO look at her web page. She often teams up with another member, Mary Sue Suit, another guild member, artist and author of several quilt books. (I am name dropping today!)
The floral was my focus fabric, but as is often the case, after the quilt is together, my focus fabric is no longer appropriate. While the colors are right, it appears kinda light and air-y, while the quilt itself is bold and strong. So back to the quilt shop, where I decided to insert a narrow (1 inch) peachy strip, then that pale creamy polka dot with floral applique added? (seen on the bottom of the photo), and now, looking at my own photo, more possibilities are coming to mind. Dang it, these numerous artistic options require more work!!! Now, I'm thinking of rummaging for my scraps from the center and making a pieced border after the peach/creamy polka dot border. Maybe I'll use the floral for the back.
Suggestions from the peanut gallery would be just fine!
That was a terrific find! Sorry your guests had to cancel, but you will be able to sew on this beauty now.

If I were doing this, I would use the floral for the backing. Please, take my opinion with several grains of salt because you do know my total lack of experience.
Bargello is my kind of quilt. I love squares and rectangles.

I'm with Nancy, put the floral on the back. It is too soft for the graphic-ness of the bargello. Does that make sense?

ReplyDeleteThe floral is really pretty. I think an interesting border would use the floral, but have some inset piecing into the floral - sort-ov continuing out the Bargello design into the border here and there- if you have some more of the Bargello fabric? Just doesn't seem like you to put on a plain fabric border?! Although - I used plain fabric borders for my Bargello and I thought it looked fine.

I like the floral - it tones down the quilt top and gives it a "girly" feel to it. Now, if you want to go in that direction I would use the floral. If you want to continue with the bold look ............ maybe a darker - simple border to frame it. I usually put my quilt top on the floor and start to pull out fabrics from my stash until I get the right "feel" ............ I'm a lot of help - right!?!?
ReplyDeleteI'm too wishy-washy to have an opinion, but I just wanted to say that it is a pretty, girly quilt. I like the way you used scrappy, but did the darks and lights.
ReplyDeleteI like the floral. Maybe if you sneek in some darker peachy-rose in the binding or in a thin second border outside the peach one, to bring some weight to the outer edge. Something about like the darkest color in those tulips? lilies? whatever the heck those are!

ReplyDeleteThe floral is lovely but not quite dark/strong enough for my eye. It would be very pretty for the back. Perhaps one of the darker fabrics in the quilt ( the stripe, the green or the red/ brown or the deep peach)could form the border. I do like the idea of something geometric to continue with the bargello design. I really like bargello quilts and have made three queen size ones. One was a design by Heidi K farmer- it was a heart.Your quilt is going to be a gorgeous quilt when it is finished.( It is already pretty gorgeous:0)
I will watch to see how you decide to finish it.

I love the floral--but would still like it to be feature, which I dont see it being, with Bargello. Confusing? Thought so.
