Ya need to have faith!

Today, my body needs to rest, so I'm parking myself at my sewing machine, using my already-cut 2 1/2 in. strips (weeks ago) to make Bonnie's Star Struck. This is the second quilt I've made using her pattern and technique - the first one used carefully selected light shirtings and indigo type blues. For this one, I'm going totally scrappy - whatever I have in the dark and light range. Thank goodness for precutting strips - what a time saver. Once again, a huge THANK YOU to Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville!

Recently I found a saved pattern from Marcie at PatchalotMore. that looked mighty appealing and spurred me on start the second project, this time, totally scrappy. Thanks Marcie, for the eye candy!
Strips by themselves are pretty blah, boring, don't match, etc. Hey, ya gotta have faith they'll look good! And yes, I'm saving the 'waste' triangles for 1 inch HSTs.

I swear, I just pulled 4 units with absolutely NO rhyme or reason and sewed them together -- not bad already, is it? This project is all part of my effort to 'get control' of my stash and USE it, not just HAVE it!

  1. Your scrappy project is sure to be a good one. Bonnie Hunter takes scrap quilting to the ultimate end and does so well at it.

  2. Your block looks great. That's one of Bonnie's patterns I want to make as well. Have spent all my spare time the last 2 or 3 days cutting fabric I ironed months ago into strips. My cutting hand feels like it might never be the same again.

  3. I worked today on my Star Struck. It will be browns/cremes with pinks as the accent. Look at my blog. I did not get too far. When I grabbed my pink container I had robbed it all making another quilt. Fabric needed ironed and cut...dang! Well all the squares are ready now and I will sew like a madwomen tomorrow. This coming weekend I get to meet Bonnie Hunter in person!

  6. Good for you! To tell you the truth, I never really like my stash and like it even less when I am using it... but once it is a finished quilt, I love the fabrics. So, go figure! I am finding that I buy very little fabric these past few years as I work on using what I have and it is all working out to be - pretty! Your new quilt is going to be just scrap lovliness - I can tell! Cheers! Evelyn

  7. Your words are just the lecture I need to give myself. Lately I have become a little overwhelmed by my stash. It has grown out of control, & I look at it, & turn away. I need to just do what you did- grab whatever is handy & go for it!!

  10. Well, I think sewing beats cleaning gutters and/or painting. I am planning a strip/string quilt that I hope to start in October or November. I do precut strips but they have been languishing in the bin. LOL

  11. It's an amazing coincidence that I looked up that pattern on quiltville just last night and was contemplating it for a quilt for my brother! He's asked me to make him one for his birthday and I'd like to use my scraps and stash. I regularly cut down my scraps a la Bonnie but have only made one project of hers so far, the Pineapple Blossom. Yours looks so friendly and warm already!

  12. Your Star Struck pattern is a wonderful scrap project. I have only made a couple of those blocks, but have always wanted to make a full quilt with that pattern. I like the scrappiness of it.

I am sure I will in the end, its just the lure of having new pieces to add to the stash that we want to do when starting a new quilt

  17. Wow, you're so ambitious with all that painting and now starting another quilt! Good idea to recoup from the painting at the sewing machine though.
Your block is wonderful, and your quilt will be too. It feels so good to make a quilt from all your scraps, doesn't it? That stash can get away from you if you don't watch it!
I still have boxes of scraps to iron and cut up a la Bonnie. They're about to get out of control again, so I need to work on that. Thanks for the inspiration!

  18. Everytime I'm tempted to throw away scraps I hear a past teacher's voice saying "you paid for it, use it ALL!" so that makes me keep it but then I need the use it part.
