38 Churn Dash blocks, while Arabic Lattice Blocks are 'cooking'

Sometimes you have to let your blocks 'cook' for a while (Arabic Lattice), so you can look at them, figure what's next, does it need a border? etc. So, with my fingers were itching to do SOMETHING, I decided to use some 1 1/2 in strips and some 2 1/2 inch strips, already cut, to make 'a few' Churndash blocks. (A "few" turned into 38 so far. I think I need 56 for a whole top.) None of the blocks are duplicates -- I LOVE how the colors play with each other. Some are lovely, some not, but all are interesting. If you sometimes feel you are in a rut with your colors, a scrappy block like this is so much fun - pairing up colors you've never used before can result in some lovely surprises. If some are just 'too much' you can always use them as the label! And so far, ALL the fabrics came from my boxes of pre-cut pieces.

These are 6 inch finished blocks and will be alternated with a quarter square of 2 colors.

This is my second Churndash quilt - the first one was hand quilted and I NEVER get tired of looking at the unexpected color combinations on that first one.

  2. Currently, when I get bogged down, I make a string block. I have found that it is calming and I am getting a great quilt out of it. Your churn dash blocks seem to be doing the same for you.

  6. I'm spending a lot of time outdoors right now, shaping up the yarden. When HOT weather really sets in, then I go into the sewing room. Like Gari, I make up strings. But my 'blocks' are usually about 10"x4".

  8. The only thing better than a stack of beautiful quilting blocks is seeing them put into a quilt. Keep stitching.

  11. Churn Dash is one of my favorite blocks. I like the proportion in yours and of course the scrappy goodness. What finished size will these be? Just fun to look at and I'm sure they are to piece as well.

  13. What wonderful, scrappy churn dashes! I love a simple block, and I LOVE playing with scraps like this.

I'm in process of starting a blue & white churn dash too. I've always loved the block, and have never done it yet.

In fact, I have been thinking about making a churn dash quilt for quite a while and I've got some fabric set aside for it. I can't wait to get to it, but will have to!

  18. I like the churn dash blocks. I am working on churn dash blocks for a challenge due in July. I only have 8 of 24 done, so I should get busy.
