Still here

This is a lovely magazine, at the checkout at my LQS, that I just grabbed - they were on sale, although I didn't bother to look at the price. I DID notice my bill was a little higher than expected.

My word - look closely -- $12.99!!!

That will teach me to NOT be so impulsive!!! I bought it for $6.50, half price.

I'm still working on and off with this String Quilt.  Here is what it looked like before I removed the paper.  BTW, phone book paper is THE best foundation for this type of project.  Much of it falls off by itself, it's free, it's entertaining reading the names I recognize, the straight lines of type are handy for keeping blocks straight, you don't have to measure when using strings on a given size of  foundation.  I use close/small (1.5 on my machine) stitches and a size 12 needle or 14 if you have an old one.  The small stitches is the key.  Yes, it took me about 4 hours to remove the paper, and makes a mess.
Between working on a secret Guild Raffle Quilt and this project, THIS project is taking me longer to finish than I prefer.

  1. I agree that phone books are great for paper piecing. I asked my sister in Denver to save some for me because the phone book in my area is pretty tiny in comparison. ;oD

  3. Your paper piecing has a great look to it with that thin black star, good job!
I impulsively purchased a quilt mag at the grocery store for the same price (only 10% off), and promptly got back in line and returned the thing. Twelve bucks is too steep for my wallet ~

  4. So - you don't have any problem with the ink on the pages ironing into the fabric? I love the quilting you're doing on it!

  5. I use phone book pages for strip piecing also. I usually take the paper off before I put the blocks together, though. I love the look of your "secret" project. It doesn't seem like a secret now! The magazines are quite expensive. I have stopped getting very many because I have so many patterns & books now that I really don't need new ideas, although I do love looking at them.

  6. Haven't bought any new magazines for a while so will have to look before I purchase. The quilt will get done little by little if you keep plugging away.

  7. I haven't done strings yet--been daunted by the amount of "after" work that follows the stitching! But the final effect is grand :)

  8. I had exactly the same experience with the same magazine!
I was trying to figure out why the bill was so high, when I finally saw the price.
    Nice magazine, though.

  9. This is one project I keep telling myself I need to do with all the scraps I've accumulated. Your magazine looks interesting. I'll have to look for it the next time I'm out.
