Missing Google Reader

For a few weeks, I've floundered around with feedly.com as my "reader" - holy smokes, sooooo cumbersome!  I've had it good with Google Reader - why oh why did they go away???   Frankly, I'm on overload messing about with feedly.com and don't even want to TRY any more - that's not sounding very positive is it?

The blogs I used to read are available on Blogger.com, but I can't tell whose I've read, whose I've not read ... and now I can't even remember which "reader" I had  before Google Reader, that indicated on all one page, who had new posts and who didn't.  Can I go back to them?  I don't know who that was???  Do I sound confused?  You betcha!

I'm looking for is a list of my blogs, an easy page to indicate if posts are new, photos that are visible without clicking here and there.  Any other suggestions out there?

Has the blog technology gotten beyond me, with the multitude of technical options?  Perhaps I'll get back to sewing and quilting a LOT, instead of playing on the computer.

...whine, whine, whine

  1. Like you, I was so disappointed when GR went away. But my husband did some researching and found Inoreader.com that I have found to be very user friendly and much like GR. I can see the new posts, what is unread, and the list of my blogs run down the left side of the page, like GR. I was going to check out feedly but heard so many negative comments that I probably won't even look at it. After using inoreader since GR went away (maybe a week now?) I am quite satisfied. I hope you saved your blogs in Google Takeout as per their instructions as that was simple to do and I imported simply into Inoreader. If I hear of something better with not so many negative comments, I will look at others as well. Read on! (think the GR message said your info would be available until July 15)

  2. Elaine, I never have used the Google Reader, as I have always read blogs from my dashboard. That sounds like what you may be looking for. It brings up the latest blog post and it is all on one page. I'm not sure how you would get to your dashboard, as mine pops up when I sign into my blog.

  3. I am using Bloglovin.com to replace Google Reader and like it. You can easily see whose posts you've read and which ones are new. It was a breeze to switch: they did all the work and transferred my Google Reader list in about three seconds.

  4. I like Blog Lovin' but I did not use Google Reader so I don't know the comparison between the two.

  5. I switched to "The Old Reader", which is, apparently, how Google Reader was before it changed.

I've only ever used Google Reader with the way it was recently, so I can't say what the "old" version was ... but .. The Old Reader really *is* virtually the same as Google Reader.

I've been very happy with it.

I've read that even though Google Reader is no longer available as an aggregator, you can *still* get your subscriptions as a downloadable file (through 7/15, I think) and then upload them to The Old Reader. That way you don't have to remember every blog you ever subscribed to and nothing will be left out.

  6. Hello Elaine,

I have had good luck with The Old Reader:

    http://theoldreader.com/

It looks and works almost identically to Google Reader. It wasn't too hard to set up.

  7. I just pick two bloggers whom I like to read all the time and read their favorite blogs from their list. No special reader required! I can always explore from there. K- That is how I read yours! :-)

  8. I'm trying both Bloglovin and RSV feed. So far, I'm leaning towards the RSV. I have a little icon up on the toolbar that lets me know when I have unread posts. I'm still holding it against Google for getting rid of Reader!

  9. Elaine, are you reading on a pc or an iPad? I tried blog login and hated it. ( I read on an iPad). But I found an app I LOVE! It is called Mr. Reader, and was really cheap, worth the 99 cents (or whatever it was). It uses feedly for the list of blogs, but it is so easy to use.

  10. Google Reader was so easy, it was a real pain when they discontinued it. I've swapped to Bloglovin and although it's not AS good, it works for me. Hope you find something that works for you soon :)

  11. I'm not real crazy about bloglovin either. It annoys me that there is only one reader post and it no longer comes on the day the blog posts were made, but now comes in the wee hours of the following morning which means I am reading the blog posts a day late. Plus, I have no idea how to go about managing my account. There must be a way, but I have not found it yet. Whatever. It was good to see your post. And to know that I am not the only frustrated reader user.

  12. I do the same as 'Sailors Mom' and use the reader in Blogger Dashboard. It lists your fav's on the side, but you can check "all" and they are then posted in date order from the most recent. You add and erase on a link right from that page. Easy peasy.

  13. Early on I switched to netvibes. I did the google take out by following the instructions and added my big list of blogs using netvibes instructions and I was set. Adding or removing is easy to do also. It is very similar to GR to me now that I have been using it for about a month.

  14. I've been using Feedly for a couple of months now and love it. And I have a LOT of blogs. However, for the last few days there has been a problem with Feedly's iPad version and I'm using Bloglovin. So far I don't much like it (doesnt allow much personalization) but I will persevere. Feedly still works just fine on my Windows laptop.

  15. I still have not figured anything out yet... I am technologically challenged :)

  16. I love your sign! I feel the same as you. I'm having trouble with the change.
