I am surrounded by beautiful semi-arid ranch country, and treeless hills and fields under incredibly wide blue skies, located far from the upheaval found often in large towns or cities. I am blessed to have delicious time to quilt and to appreciate my peaceful moments in an unpeaceful world.Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.comBlogger1002125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-31070544849769816542024-02-25T10:44:00.000-07:002024-02-25T10:44:46.270-07:002468 pieces. My second sewing station is a door on 2 file cabinets with the machine on the door, and a chair slides under the work area between the file cabinets. Occasionally the top area needs a little extra room when quilting a large quilt. I pulled one drawer out on the file cabinet, and inserted this piece of firm masonite (or similar), glued the paint sticks onto the correct place on the back so it stayed in the right place, turned the masonite over, and I have a good size area for additional support for the quilt. It is loose enough so I can just pull it off and slide it under the cabinet, and close the drawer up as needed. This cost me all of $5.10 - the large paint sticks were free, and the lumber yard cut the masonite for free. </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhp64LZ449NnJNbcPo9ztjnkgHSor87lYbxC26TO3Q0BuoTtPYjjGm0MfAnR_i6ClhEkmodEypQECfTscY2JQsBrWV9AsiqRcrJtW-fuRI-esqttx3Hs8swE_mMXmLVM-aKfTwBZ2x1VWJrZ9G4-GS_Txc4sK_uYlrjLerkRJLzCj_7hQl996LM6g" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2592" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhp64LZ449NnJNbcPo9ztjnkgHSor87lYbxC26TO3Q0BuoTtPYjjGm0MfAnR_i6ClhEkmodEypQECfTscY2JQsBrWV9AsiqRcrJtW-fuRI-esqttx3Hs8swE_mMXmLVM-aKfTwBZ2x1VWJrZ9G4-GS_Txc4sK_uYlrjLerkRJLzCj_7hQl996LM6g=w378-h284" width="378" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A better view.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgo_UMJp5FRpLRGL_ETvxsYZiPyZFUIGdiWBi05yFhCEh_Ra46r3iO6dphr5WBwuUaxCgvzKRwIcE3rohueUMlUx2gxDsL-KP-ZgU8M9qw55ytzS9o-giiceVio7LyNp390eJRvwG9-v5fLfe546XvibLSRe-Du0p4Ia3zl-brpF4HMyMZ6JcZX_A" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2592" height="278" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgo_UMJp5FRpLRGL_ETvxsYZiPyZFUIGdiWBi05yFhCEh_Ra46r3iO6dphr5WBwuUaxCgvzKRwIcE3rohueUMlUx2gxDsL-KP-ZgU8M9qw55ytzS9o-giiceVio7LyNp390eJRvwG9-v5fLfe546XvibLSRe-Du0p4Ia3zl-brpF4HMyMZ6JcZX_A=w371-h278" width="371" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A customer is required to purchase a standard size for the masonite, so there is some leftover. It's looking like "transparency", an effect I'm liking. The center blocks were all sewn and machine quilted traditionally, and I actually used a pattern. Because it's very large and I also had issues with "what machine can I use? (I hadn't purchased the Janome 6700P yet) so my plan was to make and quilt the borders separately, and add them QAYG, to eliminate some of the bulk. It's working quite well. I set up a large table in the middle of the room, to take some of the weight off my lap when finishing the last seams when hand sewing. Size is about 88" x 104" I'll make 2 pillow cases and send it off soon. May take me another 2-3 weeks for final finishing. The blocks were so much fun because while they are all almost the same, value alterations from block to block resulted in a myriad of different looks. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiCJJdosfYBKc7DhJpahu642lo5NdVoy-Y0EX7sCe57grlZ6ZCSCn1MdFCZ92AMoTgNgLXJ57IDblt78cyKCDOtynJTeDRxHkkAQXP688kWozgBkpkd7dStcYUnAHch7OZLyIqB7Iim0hVNFnYVUmcSLcxDj_qNGW1lQGaDx8NzWnAHBYlDArC0nQ" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2592" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiCJJdosfYBKc7DhJpahu642lo5NdVoy-Y0EX7sCe57grlZ6ZCSCn1MdFCZ92AMoTgNgLXJ57IDblt78cyKCDOtynJTeDRxHkkAQXP688kWozgBkpkd7dStcYUnAHch7OZLyIqB7Iim0hVNFnYVUmcSLcxDj_qNGW1lQGaDx8NzWnAHBYlDArC0nQ=w377-h283" width="377" /></a></div><p>Here is the 3-fabric mitered border, not yet finished. I'm happy. This block is from a book - yes, I actually used a pattern - <u>Rock that Quilt Block</u> by Linda Hahn & Deborah Stanley. This star is one of many crown/star arrangements from almost the same design, yet colored in many ways to suggest different designs. I wanted a block that filled up the 12 in. space, and I also came up with 20 different star designs. They blend because of general shape and/or fabrics. Corners were pp'ed and made that secondary design when the sashing was inserted between blocks. <p></p><p>Where have I been? right here, teaching, sewing and quilting, a little mentoring, running a household, keeping up the yard, etc., moving furniture, just like the rest of you. I'm going to start in June when we have a Guild class for this project, and then I'll make simply one block for a pillow. and see how it goes. The plan calls for needleturn applique but that might tire quickly and I may fall back to fusible applique. <br /> <br />Winter was just plain demanding this year - SHOVELING was repeated too many times and sometimes it was called XXXX SHOVELING! I finished this "I Spy" quilt - it looks a lot like previous ones. This is for a great grandchild, now over 2 years old. Fear kept me from washing it but finally, last weekend I put my big girl panties on and washed it in the washer, gentle, with mild homemade soap, plus a quarter cup of Dawn and 2 color catchers and happily, the quilt washed beautifully, with NO bleeding to be seen. The Color Catchers were only mildly soft pink. Plus, I was gifted membership in a multitude of wonderful TV and Internet Channels which have been a terrible temptation! Every quilt video ever made is available! I made 4 blocks at a time, wanting each group of 4 to look similar to each other. There was NO effort to "matching" seams perfectly. This quilt was so much fun to make ... fun for ME! Best thing since sliced bread. This gadget is often called a bias tape maker but I used regular SOGrain strips. There are 5 sizes in this purchase which was very affordable - I remember $8.00 for all. I LOVE a good tool. You simply slide the strip into the gadget, pull thru with a pin, and it comes out folded and you place your iron onto the newly folded strip. Each strip is DONE in a matter of seconds. I'm trying to invent new ways to use it! It was close to perfect each time, and even with a seam in the strip, the gadget only complained a bit and was simple to tidy up the seam area, and NO BURNED fingers. Then I sewed the strips down over the quilt's exposed seams, leaving neat, visible quilting strips on the front. Very quick, neat and tidy. </p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhxzh91NOW_ktTkbjM2lQU7XCsoghlQD1vcoKjdEQdBdVVMe8WBVhIkKiv8Y7C3n63ESrJufaQm0o6dyIy8ros3MvRqcr4ctGJtPyS98g1-Aizvqmtm0M_zxMX1PmKfP1p4m5Y7w0ohOWW80j7Q0_sEmr9uvlMBfTjFzTPcvRHgG0D9Mt8mrWo" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2592" height="352" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhxzh91NOW_ktTkbjM2lQU7XCsoghlQD1vcoKjdEQdBdVVMe8WBVhIkKiv8Y7C3n63ESrJufaQm0o6dyIy8ros3MvRqcr4ctGJtPyS98g1-Aizvqmtm0M_zxMX1PmKfP1p4m5Y7w0ohOWW80j7Q0_sEmr9uvlMBfTjFzTPcvRHgG0D9Mt8mrWo=w469-h352" width="469" /></a><p></p><p>I've made a LOT of kid's QAYG quilts, LOVE the process, and am slowly learning which method is better for which reason. A person has to try many and decide for self. With this project. I used the same size of batting as the block and backing, which meant a lot of bulk in those corners on the back. Next time I will cut the batting smaller which will result in less bulk. I'm going to wash the quilt today to soften up that bulky joint. </p><p>Happy quilting everyone!</p>Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-45638033349756213012023-01-08T12:57:00.023-07:002023-01-08T19:44:51.570-07:00I'm still here!<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgDfyEtL-ZTlTQ_5optb2V8TKqJycVTrynWyebmW7weSQq2V0rQjIbgS4BbMZ1Al6qoWhzEL11Ne2gPbYppPPADM2N3ffJLFbqe7zILpKnUWNhSAwO4G538cKLZ7Rjn2w2MS3H869yM_QUc8k1TajtaiDvJ07u4VpdUYufw5d29kg4330IWfaI" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2592" height="364" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgDfyEtL-ZTlTQ_5optb2V8TKqJycVTrynWyebmW7weSQq2V0rQjIbgS4BbMZ1Al6qoWhzEL11Ne2gPbYppPPADM2N3ffJLFbqe7zILpKnUWNhSAwO4G538cKLZ7Rjn2w2MS3H869yM_QUc8k1TajtaiDvJ07u4VpdUYufw5d29kg4330IWfaI=w485-h364" width="485" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>* This QOV was donated, as well as 2 kids quilts </div><div>* I made a LOT of zip pouches until zipper stash was depleted. </div><div>* Made a pleasant drive (2 days) by myself to Indiana to surprise my sister who was making a rest stop in Indiana, on her way from Canada to Florida. Grand-daughter who works with electronic gadgetry visited and suggested she include me on her "family plan" at no cost to me, so what could I do? - I said "great!" and she pushed a bunch of buttons, and voila - there it was, overload, but still great fun to learn it's intricasies. <p></p>Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-49718005592293346642022-09-06T11:37:00.001-07:002022-09-06T11:37:00.189-07:00Another "I Spy" quilt, ready for gifting<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiow-xgZgwgFCH7dN4ZK7KDwA46FM8IQCfcak2QM1_UOMwbdjrGma0pemBOC20iC2XoIBx6gk_iU1iraWt4MIsY6PSP6TkmQXvXVClCz8vyBJtUrnBM2ylzY0pD7Q9YFFTSoDUpqg-3wB_8fbgd_ePllF9fBg_BFaT5w-9c6XMYFz3JatloVmk" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="2403" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiow-xgZgwgFCH7dN4ZK7KDwA46FM8IQCfcak2QM1_UOMwbdjrGma0pemBOC20iC2XoIBx6gk_iU1iraWt4MIsY6PSP6TkmQXvXVClCz8vyBJtUrnBM2ylzY0pD7Q9YFFTSoDUpqg-3wB_8fbgd_ePllF9fBg_BFaT5w-9c6XMYFz3JatloVmk=w507-h410" width="507" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Many of these cutsies are from many of YOU! It had been completed about 4 years ago. The process was managed reasonably well with a Quilt as You Go method. Because of its increased size, it became heavy and difficult to maneuver under the sewing machine at times so I had to revert to hand sewing. The added part starts with that narrow binding, then a 6 inch beige/tan piece, then a new binding. The yellow toile is the original backing. (It's folded back on itself.) I LOVE how it turned out and is perfect on the bed. The label will be updated with the new dimensions. <p></p><p></p>Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-2066990723432815862022-05-18T20:43:00.000-07:002022-05-18T20:43:12.529-07:00Increasing size of my finished quilt<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC9YO19QwmEC2s7EZPJpJI63x1TtFND1caYbOy9MEBwteIE7IFOKQFvnCCem84EeLKtKxTo-BrHaa-_hD4WAXlzxv8EZzez_FyM7vpvzrYaIbqFWDWV5Q-xESxJclEZznmTTm2zorfLk_8GJ4_lggoR1JKJH7Jv96c4HnKkAD6Qj-Ci9Uc6pI/s2048/100_3336.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC9YO19QwmEC2s7EZPJpJI63x1TtFND1caYbOy9MEBwteIE7IFOKQFvnCCem84EeLKtKxTo-BrHaa-_hD4WAXlzxv8EZzez_FyM7vpvzrYaIbqFWDWV5Q-xESxJclEZznmTTm2zorfLk_8GJ4_lggoR1JKJH7Jv96c4HnKkAD6Qj-Ci9Uc6pI/w473-h355/100_3336.JPG" width="473" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This favorite quilt was finished several years ago, from Quiltville, from one of Bonnie Hunter's books, -- she called her pattern Day Break. Despite looking fiddly and painful to deal with little pieces, the blocks went together quickly, and the little bits were perfectly aligned. It has sentimental emotions attached, was one of the quilts made from the "box of scraps" my LQS gave me, and I had hand quilted the border during a lovely jaunt DH and I took Roosevelt National Park - I really love it, called it "Slim Pickins". But it was just too small to cover the blankets on a full size bed . Note the borders in the above photo -- 3 sides have an additional border added - I'm working on the 4th. I removed the binding, then dug into scraps and decided to add 6 inches to each side, sort of Quilt as you Go method. It's not perfect on the back but it will do, now measuring about 84" x 96". Yes, the little border squares are one inch. Again, I pulled out the big table hidden behind the sofa, to help while working on it. Having that table INSIDE the house was one of my best ideas. </div><p></p>Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-38526148074724270892022-05-01T13:26:00.001-07:002022-05-01T13:26:23.762-07:00That hard-to-remember FLOAT calculation<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7K7__QSanPp4oVPHFtS5xIvgG-AR0RoLDvQccYmdvVimWzzGLKViHWiJupXy7cPszDdWuyYVf3hZsCwS8YeeQZx-krVgpmiIYcjUIgR_dUUh6vGGGT88WJVRfd6eGO4OO9hRgp9ije6X9l1oNzWe6E_uY78c5TPMQ17-e8-cRxKCvleh3e_g/s2048/100_3335.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="389" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7K7__QSanPp4oVPHFtS5xIvgG-AR0RoLDvQccYmdvVimWzzGLKViHWiJupXy7cPszDdWuyYVf3hZsCwS8YeeQZx-krVgpmiIYcjUIgR_dUUh6vGGGT88WJVRfd6eGO4OO9hRgp9ije6X9l1oNzWe6E_uY78c5TPMQ17-e8-cRxKCvleh3e_g/w518-h389/100_3335.JPG" width="518" /></a></div><br />My first calculation resulted in a "float" of about 3.5 inches ... uhh, doesn't sound right. Yes, that's right - 250 miles from my home. Since I live alone, getting to that appt. had a number of logistic issues. And winter storms that may or may not happen didn't help anxiety levels. Taking blood thinners mean you must adhere to an exact dose stopping at an exact date before surgery, adding to stress on that point alone. I planned to drive myself to my brother's home in Broomfield, Co., not too far from the hospital, and they offered to get me to/from the hospital, all of us frazzled with Denver traffic and with ever-threatening snow complications. I enjoy driving but have no knowledge of Denver traffic. I made it just fine to their home. My brother and wife are also respectful of traffic and rush hours, none of us are spring chickens! As expected, my visit with them was absolutely wonderful, weather/snow complications were managed, surgery went just fine, I didn't die - what more was needed? Bruises to my old body (blood thinners) was frightingly impressive, but slowly disappearing. Frankly, I enjoy "new adventures" but this one was a corker! I loved my family visit and rehashing old memories, enjoyed being waited on for several days during recuperation and learning some new food items as brother and wife cook "organic". My recovery was unexpectedly easy, and I drove home after several days of recuperation. </div><div><br /></div><div>Why does it take a month to make up for 10 days gone after returning home???? <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /><br /><p></p><p><br /></p></div>Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-32730151154359439462022-02-24T14:03:00.000-07:002022-02-24T14:03:10.523-07:00Less than enthusiastic <p> I've been putting off a job - clearing out my huge trash basket next to the sewing machine. Sometimes, good stuff remains on my sewing desk and I just swish all those unknowns into the huge trash basket, mostly to clear it off my mind. A few crumb block items were made recently from the top layers, but its depths remained undisturbed for years. Today was the day. The 6 ft. picnic table was dragged from behind the sofa and set up for WORK! I figured, lights, medium lights, darks including black and reds, bright kids prints, and several packages of "too good to throw out, but presently useless."</p><p>Here is yet another mess! Nothing except the woven trash basket seams worth keeping! Perhaps I've already used up the best parts? ...perhaps I should press it all and trim ... maybe an Internet search to Walmart or Menards to invest in another small storage cabinet ... there went 2 hours on the computer!</p><p>With so much unused, sorted, pressed yardage nicely folded up in other cabinet drawers, it seems almost pointless to use up these bits and crumbs. Maybe this mess needs to "cook" for a while .. maybe I should just make up a few 9-patches and see what happens, maybe a double strong cup of coffee??? or, perhaps I should just return to the collection of "I spy" prints, stored in another cabinet. OK brain, concentrate and do SOMETHING!!!!</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCjYXn_I9QLYEa-khJb-hS3hg0UyB4J-biLpU2GkR19cJiL43cwW4dQjhh72CamgxLnM5BTCoLDVYp2VnhSEaF3IdrAy1S__w67pdmQujYCsfsPKI5WVo-_ZEd6UPOU-ONgNFqD-vTyuFQcIknN_Nie8n2YnWrGE1Hl5e-67GEzEoXmHDKJ78" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCjYXn_I9QLYEa-khJb-hS3hg0UyB4J-biLpU2GkR19cJiL43cwW4dQjhh72CamgxLnM5BTCoLDVYp2VnhSEaF3IdrAy1S__w67pdmQujYCsfsPKI5WVo-_ZEd6UPOU-ONgNFqD-vTyuFQcIknN_Nie8n2YnWrGE1Hl5e-67GEzEoXmHDKJ78=w546-h410" width="546" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p>Elaine Adairhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14664504842156046995noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32363339.post-35789050175283994882022-02-20T12:05:00.001-07:002022-02-20T12:05:59.036-07:00Still Here - Making "I Spy" quilts<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Another "I Spy" quilt - the back - I finally can use that wild stripe!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEinMeB_R1y2AdrFVt5IKr0hqpwZdYwmB1Z08S0CnOL4G6aQt93SmtSIxpPa6XaKWkhngDoA-pVUq5eZ9F-vS00QjSWlmnHRiqQY-saQE2iTUmsSq011R2cB1FVrRTsyM6uDPbBGn-wedHDjEUNHF9le0TNleXoUBLpsRbsRrW2Ja0ABsi2crJE" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="347" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEinMeB_R1y2AdrFVt5IKr0hqpwZdYwmB1Z08S0CnOL4G6aQt93SmtSIxpPa6XaKWkhngDoA-pVUq5eZ9F-vS00QjSWlmnHRiqQY-saQE2iTUmsSq011R2cB1FVrRTsyM6uDPbBGn-wedHDjEUNHF9le0TNleXoUBLpsRbsRrW2Ja0ABsi2crJE=w463-h347" width="463" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Some of you kindly sent me "cutsies" - I'm using them.
