What is that thing?

OK, 'Bloggers-who-have-learned-everything' -- I have a question. When I comment on many blogs, often there is a requirement for Word Verification. Next to the block where you type the letters, is a small icon, that looks like a wheelchair. OK, I thought it might have something to do with Handicap Accessibility, so I clicked on it. Sound begins, then I'm hearing female voices, most of which is unintelligible. I recognize a few words, but mostly I cannot make sense of it - and it doesn't even sound like any particular language.

What is that?

  1. I don't have sound on my computer, but I think she's reading the letters out for people who just can't get the jumble of words. Or have a sight problem.

I finally did away with my word verification, it's easier for everybody and I have time to weed out the 3 whole pieces of spam I've ever gotten. ;)

  4. It's a tad on the creepy side - I sure don't understand how that miht help a handicapped person. If they can see to click on it, and if they have the ability to clik on it, why would they need it?

  5. Oh my gosh, that is SO weird! It does sound like a reversed recording, and VERY creepy.

Heck, I can't TYPE what's written there much less understand what all of them are saying!

How many times do you type it wrong? (or am I the only one?) I am an Admin. Asst. for a living and type 80wpm for gosh sake, but never get it right on the first try.

  6. You probably have to have specific software to unscramble what is being said - and it probably is for sight challenged folks. That is my guess.

  7. I have just tryed it. It does sound weird but it is on purpose. You have to hear the numbers beeing said clearly out of the mumble and type them down instead of the letters. They repeat them a second time as well. As I sit in Germany the numbers I heard were in German. I hope that could help. Take care.

  8. I'm with Leah, I turned my verification off. Knock on wood, but I haven't had a problem yet.

It does sound like a record being played backwards.
