A tip, and DONE

I presume you've all seen this type of Label Panel? Aren't they all just too clever? Wouldn't a yard of this be a wonderful gift to a quilter?

The next photo is my big pin cushion. While I LOVE my magnetic pincushion, it stays by my machine, but when I pick up the pins, needles, threads, thimbles for sewing binding, something invariably gets forgotten or dropped between my studio and the TV where I'm planning to sew. A big toothpick holds bobbins of thread. The thimbles always got dropped or lost, so I cut 2 pieces of PVC pipe, the right size, and glued them onto the pincushion. Works PERFECTLY for me - they don't roll away, under the sofa, etc.

This Bargello Baby (below) is DONE, DONE, DONE! I'm calling it Autumn Venture. Venture because a lot of what I tried/risked, WAS a venture into unknown territory. I AM sewing some veins on the green leaves and have to sew on the label. This goes into the 2009 Quilt Show category -- too late for this year. There is more color than is apparent in the outdoor photo. And to think this was just a UFO in a dusty corner without a purpose. I quilted a small leaf and vine in the narrow border and did close meanering on the last border.

Happy and safe July 4th to everyone!

  1. Your bargello turned out wonderful. Now to finish mine as I just have the border and then bind it. I just need to figure out how to quilt the border lol

  4. Great two-fabric leaves. Your quilts are such fun to look at. I especially like the leaf quilting. I'll have to try that sometime. I quilt on my Janome 6500 as well.

The striped fabric (at least that is what it looks like) gives it some extra va-va-va-voom.

  5. Hi Elaine,

I love bargello quilts and yours is absolutely gorgeous. The vine applique is the perfect border.

I love the labels and use them regularly when I finish a quilt. The only quilts that don't have labels are the ones that I have kept for our use. If I give them away, I like to label them using a permanent sharpie and a pretty label. I know there are some great patterns out there for making your own and some wonderful computer programs but so far these labels have worked for me. I like the group you have and happen to have them in my label box.
I hope you are having a Happy fourth of July.
    Regards,
    Anna

  6. Oh, I like your bargello quilt. Your quilting is great. And to think it is no longer a UFO. Doesn't it feel good to get a UFO finished? I wanted to make this my "Finish the UFOs year". I haven't quite started that goal, yet.

I also like your idea of the PVC pipe. Good tip. You should send that in to a magazine or a quilt show to be included in their tips and tricks.

I have not seen the label fabric on the bolt. I think that is another good idea. Labels do not always get attached to my quilts. I never seem to have time to make one. I often am finishing the last stitches on the bindings just before I have to give them away.

  7. I love your bargello. People who can do beautiful applique amaze me. (I love the look of it but am not good at doing it.) It really adds to the quilt.

  11. The labels are so seductive when you're shopping, but when I get them home, there never seems to be one which quite fits the quilt! Either thewords are wrong or the deign or the colour. Perhaps I'm too picky!
