Strip and Slash - I LOVE her technique!

Strip and Slash, from Jackie Robinson (Animas Quilts) - these blocks are all small HST's and each block finishes to approx. 3 3/4 in.  Yes, they are small, like scrappy jewels!  I was not original in my finished design but made mine exactly as suggested - mostly because I was getting mixed up with all the various options.  Her method is exact and precise - that's what I love, and the construction is unique.  Look closely and you can see the many fabrics I used, all either LIGHTs and DARKs.  I've used this technique previously over the years and viewers are frequently surprised to see how the mixture of small scraps turns into something so precise and attractive.

I checked my own libraary to find additional suggestions for HST quilt designs, and then found Karen Combs' Combing Thru Your Scraps, in which she includes many examples for HSTs, altho her method for construction is not the same.  (That venture turned into yet another project ... currently a WIP).

Here is a close-up, including a faux flange binding, which eliminates hand stitching and taught by guild member Jody.  (Oops, who sewed those blue pieces?)

  2. You wanna know what gave me the most courage to start quilting? It was a Georgia Bonesteel book cover, and her points didn't match!!!

    HEY!!! I can do that!!

But seriously, it made me realize, once again, that we're too close to our work. Step back a pace or ten ("from the back of a galloping horse") and what seems to be blindingly obvious suddenly fades into the background.

I am continually motivated by imperfection, because I can see how great it looks from a distance, and from an unbiased view.

    1. Great words! The word "quilting" encompasses ALL aspects of making a quilt - perfection or casual, sophisticated or humble - it's all good. BTW, I also learned quilting from Georgia Bonesteel - it was those wonderful TV shows she did.

  3. I wasn't familiar with this technique so I searched for it. There's an excerpt from the DVD lesson on YouTube that doesn't give all the instructions but I get the idea. As for HSTs, there are so many ways to set them! I am partial to the design concept in Spectacular Scraps by Judy Hooworth and Margaret Rolfe.

    1. I just purchased this book you suggested. Wow, what great color/values and layouts for "simple" HSTs! Just what I LOVE. Thans for the useful tip.

  4. I'm teaching this class sometime in spring '26 for our Guild. Have been in comm. w/Jackie Robinson family. This is more of a process - and her pressing instr. make it go so smoothly. I purchased her DVD many years ago - finally had to purchase a separate DVD player, it was so long ago, when TVs came with DVD players. Now, I'll check out your suggestion - I recognize the names - thanks for tip.
