Nosedive!

Last evening, about 8:30 (dusk), I went for a lovely walk as DH was playing on the computer AND was on the telephone with his grandaughter who was trying to teach him how to use the computer! LOL Somewhere along the way, I tripped on one of those places where the sidewalk is pushed UP, and quilters, I took a NOSEDIVE! Between the time I was upright and downright (is that a word?) my whole life passed before me, including who was going to get all my sewing stuff since I was going to be DEAD after I hit pavement! It's amazing how many thoughts can go through your head in an instant!

I hit hard - was dazed but did not pass out. Fortunately, several young women were sitting out on their porch, also enjoying the lovely evening. I called HELP, and 3 came to my assistance. My eyebrow and cheek bloody, glasses damaged but usable, shoe went somewhere and was retrieved by a sweet little girl. Cell phones by all 3 women were pulled out, but since DH was on the phone at home, that didn't work. Despite suggestions to call ambulance, I said NO, as I slowly pulled myself together and painfully stood up. One of them kindly walked home with me and of course, I'm embarrassed to death. DH, still on the phone, was shocked, as I hobbled downstairs, with my bloody and broken face. OK, OK, cold compresses, sit down, glass of water, etc.

Eventually off to the hospital we went, to see about stitches or concussion, or breaks in my jaw, etc, and home about midnight, tired, embarrassed, sore, and it's waaaay past my bedtime. So much for privacy at the hospital - our friend Jon, who was also in one of the rooms with a relative, heard our voices and came over to see what damage had been done! Coulda been worse! Bruised knees, all teeth intact, ugly bruised chin, black eye, and several facial cuts now glued shut, but no stitches. This morning, I look even worse -- like something dead that the cat dragged in!

And tomorrow I have Quilt Guild and MUST be there for various reasons.

When you go to the hospital with your husband, and one's face is bloodied, there are policemen there, asking cagey questions - there must be a LOT of times when women have damaged faces caused by a man. DH was also feeling guilty just for being a man, and was as much a wreck as I was -- LOL -- Lotsa questions - MORE embarrassing for both of us.

Broken Elaine Adair, Poor Baby
P.S. I DID take photos, but looking at my own crinkly skin CLOSE UP, in addition to the damage, was toooo much to bear for me. Dh said it was OK for him.

  1. Oh, Elaine, I'm so glad you're ok. Well, bruised and battered, but you'll heal. What a lovely bunch of neighbors to walk you home. Take care.

  2. Yikes! Glad you escaped with all your teeth intact and nothing broken! It might be a good time for some cucumber slices and/or a bag of frozen peas on those bruises...

  4. Goodness Elaine, I'm so glad you didn't break anything. Like a hip that would have needed major surgery. Wear a patch over your bad eye to the guild meeting and tell everyone you're practicing for Halloween. Feel better!

  5. I am so glad you are relatively all right. As much as I would love to look around during my walks, I have to watch where I put my feet. It is safer.

  6. Oh my goodness Elaine. I hope that you are all right. You really took a hard fall. It can be pretty hard on us, as we (ahem) get older. Take it easy and try not to do too much. Let you body have a chance to repair itself. Take care lady!

  9. So sorry to hear about your tumble. As the other commenters said it is a good thing you didn't break teeth or bones. Cuts will heal much, much faster and bruses will fade with time. Take care of yourself!

  11. Elaine, I am so sorry! Oh your poor face. I'm glad you had no breaks or worse. Are you sure you're ok to go out tomorrow? Oh ouchee. I can relate to your comments about your life passing before your eyes. I took a nose dive to the cement a couple years ago and I thought I would be in heaven when my head hit. Dazed for sure. Take care, friend!

  20. Oh Elaine, what a terrible experience. However, if this is any comfort, your description of it was an example of very good writing! I felt like I went down with you!! Many hugs and hope that the bruises do something positive... maybe inspire a new color scheme?

    my prayers too...

  21. Glad to know you are okay--though the embarrassment stung, I hope your lack of broken bones or serious head injury soothes your feelings! I once did an intake history on a guy who fell off a ladder. He said his first thought as he was falling 12 feet was "This is really gonna suck". LOL. You obviously have a deeper intelligence because your stash/sewing things were uppermost in thought! Heal quickly, I pray, before you get tired of having to explain the story over and over...

  28. So sorry about the fall - hope you're better by now. I can imagine how mortified DH was. I've tripped and taken a header a couple of times in my life (thankfully never hurt badly) and the thought I had while falling was "Did anyone see that?" Embarrassment is harder to deal with than bruises! But isn't it wonderful how quickly other women run to our aid?

  29. Sorry to hear about your fall. It could have been serious. Hope you're feeling better soon. Thank goodness for those nice ladies who helped you.

  31. So glad you are okay, sort of okay I mean. Glad you didn't break anything, other than your ego. Hope you are feeling better. Go to that quild meeting. You will get all kinds of sympathy and attention!

  32. Oh my gosh Elaine. I am always embarassed when that happens too but we shouldn't be. People are so glad to help and glad you are ok. I know that feeling of going down. It is like time stops! I hope you feel better.

  33. Oh!! Poor Sweet Elaine!!! I hope your going to be able to take it easy after your quilt guild meeting. No headaches? Can you see? Maybe until the bruises go away you can quilt... Just like when you broke your leg a while back? Thinking of you!

  34. Oh Poor You! I hope your are feeling better and heal thoroughly.
I know exactly how your husband must have felt too. Recently my husband was "jumped" and has several broken bones around his eye and his nose was fractured. He was complaining about his ribs and I thought he could have some broken rib when he was assaulted. He was hurting and with his coumadin medicine and bad heart, I insisted on taking him to the hospital. Jeez, the staff didn't ask me any questions but I did catch a couple of them slyly looking at my hands! I finally made a joke about it while in the ER since I had to drag him there in the first place!
Well as you said, it could have been worse and I am thankful it's superficial even though you must have looked a sight at guild.
Have fun with it and I wish you a speedy recovery.

  35. Oh My Goodness! Embarrassment AND bruises goes away! I'm so glad that the important things are intact or healable...skin, teeth ect. If all else fails, take a picture to scare your friends at Halloween!!!!

  36. Oh my gosh! I'm glad you are OK! I had heard that any time a woman comes into the ER injured that the husband gets the third degree. Hopefully this will be a funny story soon (as soon as the pain passes I suppose).

  37. Ouch! I'm reading this a little after the fact. Did your face go through the black, purple, blue, green, yellow phases? So glad it wasn't anything worse... isn't it sad that the police have to wonder about the cause of such a thing. To think that it happens often enough that they have to be suspicious.. it's very sad.

  38. I am really super sorry. A big whoops! And I hope you are healing up by now.
