String Spools, and Dove in the Nest

If it hadn’t been for ALL of you, encouraging me to finish this little quilt that didn’t seem to have much potential, I wouldn’t have this lively little FINISHED project! THANKS! “You don’t know how it will look until it’s finished!” I almost didn’t follow my own advice!

It’s quilted it in a playful swirls, with bright “King Tut” brand, variegated #40, thread. It took a little practice on my Magna Doodle to get the pattern ingrained on my brain, but once started, I couldn’t stop. (I'm still practicing my machine quilting on my domestic machine. The heavy quilting tends to blend the many colors. This was a delightfully entertaining project to quilt, with each border quilted in a different pattern. The binding was finished tonight while DH was watching a too-complicated espionage movie on TV, and I was trying to spend some quality time with him. (Does that count as quality time?)

This little Mama dove is almost totally hidden, yet is 6 feet from my eyes. When I unfurled my quilt for the photo, she flew away - I felt TERRIBLE! But she'll be back, and we can watch her family grow.

  1. Elaine, I love the quilt. Your quilting is marvellous, an inspiration for me to practice more. Have found an old telephone book, so as my sewing machine is on sebatical until the No2 son returns to his home, I can spend time cutting the pages, sorting the fabrics and strip cutting them. Thank you for inspiring me this way. The little Dove is beautiful, just made her out.

  2. MAGNA doodle?! How cool! I have one of those in the grandkids toybox; what a good idea. I love the heavy quilting like that, and the King Tut thread is the best. Congratulations!

  3. The quilt looks great. King Tut thread is the greatest, it's my favorite of all threads on my longarm.

  4. Thanks for the magna doodle idea -- dd will love playing with it when Mommy isn't busy with it! Hehehehe!

I'm so glad you finished this one, it really is a knock out. And yes, sitting with your husband and stitching a binding while he watches a complicated movie DOES count as together time!

  9. You're still thinking spools? even though you quilted wind patterns? There is a crisp/clean/joyous feeling to this quilt. I like your choice of dark blue for the borders.

  10. I love those swirls - though I'll bet they are harder to quilt than they look.

  13. Congratulations on your finished quilt. It is beautiful and the quilting a happy match! I like King Tut as well especially for machine quilting. And the variegated threads are all so nice, like sweets. Take care.

Don't you just love having a family of birds to watch in the spring??! I have a family of pigeons right outside the bedroom window that I am fascinated with. Good times!! It's really a blessing when you can enjoy the little things that life has to offer.
    Have a great day!!
